Somers Vision Clinic No Longer Fitting ACUVUE Contact Lenses
In light of the recent court ruling that Johnson & Johnson made a major contribution to Oklahoma’s opioid crisis, we have decided that we will no longer be fitting ACUVUE contact lenses. The ruling that Johnson & Johnson ignored warnings by the federal government and its own scientific advisors about the risks of these drugs demonstrates a disregard for human life that we cannot ignore.
We will no longer provide ACUVUE contact lens fittings for new patients. For existing patients who are currently using ACUVUE lenses, we are offering a no-cost refitting to another brand of contact lenses, provided they purchase the new lenses through our practice.
In the Johnson & Johnson verdict, Oklahoma District Judge Thad Balkman ordered the corporation to pay $572 million in damages. Johnson & Johnson is just one of the opioid companies being sued by more than 2,000 cities and counties across the country for misrepresenting the risks of long-term opioid use for the management of chronic pain. Between 1999 and 2017, the opioid crisis has claimed more than 400,000 lives in the United States.
